Quarter Life Crisis

Whether you call it a Quarter-Life Crisis, a phase, a funk, or “just how life is” – for many women, the 20s and even 30s is a challenging time. At times many women question the facets of their lives and are overwhelmed with doubt, anxiety and confusion about who they are and what they really want in life.

Here are some characteristics of the quarter-life crisis:

  • a sense that everyone is, somehow, doing better than you
  • feeling "not good enough" because your job isn’t at your academic/intellectual level
  • frustration with relationships, the working world, and finding a suitable career
  • confusion of identity/where you fit in the world
  • insecurity about the near future as well as long-term plans and life goals
  • disappointment with one's job and life accomplishments
  • lack of satisfaction in social interactions and activities
  • loss of closeness to high school and college friends; difficulty finding a community of friends
  • financially-rooted stress (overwhelming college loans, high cost of living, etc.)
  • loneliness; desire to be in a romantic relationship or feeling like everyone else is getting married
  • feeling pressure and expectations to do, have or be something more
  • feeling like your “clock is ticking” for career, marriage, children
  • difficulty making major decisions – and when you do, questioning them
  • life just not turning out how you had planned

What’s behind the quarterlife crisis? There are a lot of theories about why this time of life is so difficult, and each person’s reason may be different. Here are some of my thoughts about why most women have a hard time navigating the 20s and 30s.
